Westjet is planning to provide refunds to everyone who had their flights canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The airline announced on Wednesday they’ll be returning the funds starting on Monday, November 2.
Westjet adds the delay is the result of the company having to find ways to reduce costs as they saw a 95 per cent drop in demand. This resulted in around 4,000 employees being laid off.
Early on in the pandemic, they also saw 72 days in a row where cancellations outnumbered bookings.
“Love us or hate us right now, we are doing everything we can to make sure we’re around tomorrow, and next year, for you hopefully to, love us once more,” read a statement from the company.
“Through the efforts of thousands of WestJetters, we are confident that we can now begin providing refunds proactively.”
Westjet says they’re the first airline in Canada to announce plans to refund travelers. However, Air Canada states they’ve refunded around $1.2 billion to customers to date.
They note it may take a few months to clear up the massive backlog they’re currently facing.
Those who are eligible will receive an email for further instructions.
