FORT McMURRAY — The Hub Family Resource Centre and Waypoints Community Services Association are receiving new provincial support as Alberta rolls out nearly $6 million for programs that aim to prevent, interrupt and respond to family violence.
The funding is part of the Taking Action on Family Violence grant program, which backs 26 community groups across Alberta. The goal is to stop violence before it starts, intervene early when warning signs appear and help survivors rebuild safe and stable lives.
Children and Family Services Minister Searle Turton said the province wants to make sure people facing violence can access supports that meet their cultural and personal needs. The grants are tied to Alberta’s 10-year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence. The province says it invests more than $188 million each year in gender-based violence prevention, including $88 million this year for shelters, sexual assault centres and related services.
Arts, Culture and Status of Women Minister Tanya Fir said the funding aligns with Family Violence Prevention Month and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign.
Waypoints is receiving the support as the fiscal agent for the local Family Violence Coordinating Council. The Hub Family Resource Centre is also on the list of recipients. Both groups will use the funding to strengthen prevention programming, expand outreach and improve coordination with local partners throughout Wood Buffalo.
Other funded projects across Alberta will focus on healthy relationship education, newcomer and culturally informed supports, engaging men and boys as allies and improving services in rural and Indigenous communities.
People in Alberta affected by family or gender-based violence can call or text the Family Violence Info Line at 310 1818 or use the confidential Safety Chat at alberta.ca/SafetyChat. Phone support is offered in more than 170 languages. Anyone in immediate danger should call 911.
