Additional mental health supports for residents who have been affected by the flooding are on the way.
The provincial government announced on Monday is providing $500,000 to Alberta Health Services to help those living in Fort McMurray and Fort Vermillion.
“The people of northern Alberta have faced a series of enormous challenges in the last several years – wildfire, economic downturn, flooding and a pandemic,” said Jason Luan, Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, in a release.
“The cumulative effect of these difficulties can be mentally and emotionally overwhelming. Our government wants to ensure Albertans have the support needed to restore their homes, their lives and their well-being.”
The funds will be used for extra staffing trained in psychiatric, nursing and social work support, as well as addiction recovery.
“I encourage those affected by the loss and destruction of recent flooding to seek mental health support if you are feeling overwhelmed or are struggling,” added Laila Goodridge, MLA for Fort McMurray-Lac La Biche.
“Please know that you don’t need to face these hardships alone; others are available to listen and to help.”
