FORT McMURRAY — There are only a few weeks left in winter road maintenance season in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, but unseasonably cold weather has extended winter conditions beyond what residents typically expect this time of year.
While attention often turns to river breakup in late March, municipal crews are still focused on snow clearing as part of ongoing winter maintenance efforts ahead of the spring thaw.
The municipality says Winter Maintenance Subzones 3 and 4 will be active from March 30 to April 3, with on-street parking restrictions in effect from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on designated maintenance days.
Residents in active subzones are required to move vehicles off the street to allow crews to clear snow and improve drainage. Temporary no-parking signs will also be posted in advance of work in other areas, including Subzones 1 and 2, where crews are prioritizing residential streets.
Officials say work across all subzones includes clearing storm drains and widening roads to help manage runoff as temperatures begin to rise.
Snow removal is also scheduled this weekend on busy downtown streets not included in the Winter Maintenance Zone program, with temporary parking restrictions expected to be in place.
The municipality is also advising drivers to use caution on Thickwood Boulevard, where increased truck traffic is expected with the reopening of the Dickinsfield snow dump.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates through municipal channels, including online tools, neighbourhood signage and social media, as winter maintenance operations continue.
