EDMONTON — Alberta NDP public safety critic David Shepherd says he will introduce a motion in the legislature next week calling on the provincial government to redirect funding from a proposed Alberta provincial police service toward programs aimed at addressing crime and social disorder.
Shepherd, the MLA for Edmonton-Centre, plans to introduce Motion 508 during private members’ business on March 16.
The motion asks the Legislative Assembly to recognize rising crime and social disorder as a priority for Albertans and notes businesses and individuals are bearing significant costs linked to those issues. It also argues insufficient government action has contributed to the problem.

The proposal urges the government to redirect resources allocated for the Alberta provincial police service initiative toward services and programs intended to improve public safety.
Shepherd said the United Conservative government has spent more than $200 million over the past two years on plans for a provincial police force, with another $37 million budgeted this year.
Private members’ motions are not binding but allow MLAs to bring policy proposals to the legislature for debate and a vote.
