FORT McMURRAY — Police in northern Alberta say a hit-and-run investigation led to the seizure of several firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition from a Fort McMurray residence.
Wood Buffalo RCMP say officers began investigating the incident Feb. 25 after receiving a report of a hit and run on Manning Avenue in downtown Fort McMurray shortly before 9 a.m.
Mounties identified a suspect vehicle, described as a black 2011 Chevrolet Silverado, and later located it parked in the Gregoire area of the city.
Police say the driver showed signs of impairment and was arrested. Officers also discovered an unsecured firearm in the back seat while seizing the vehicle.
The discovery prompted investigators to obtain a search warrant for the driver’s residence in Gregoire.
RCMP say the search resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms, including rifles, a semi-automatic rifle and a shotgun, along with firearms scopes, magazines and thousands of rounds of ammunition.
A 65-year-old Fort McMurray man, John Goode, is charged with impaired operation, impaired operation exceeding 80 milligrams, seven counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, two counts of careless use of a firearm and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.
Goode was held for a judicial interim hearing and later released. He is scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Fort McMurray on March 11.
