EDMONTON — Alberta’s NDP shadow minister for primary and preventative health services is calling on the United Conservative government to act following what he describes as the deadliest flu season on record.
Sharif Haji says 250 lives have been lost so far this season, marking the fourth consecutive year of rising flu related deaths in the province.
Haji says vaccination rates have declined since 2022 and now sit at about 20 per cent. He says lower uptake has led to more severe illness and increased pressure on emergency departments and hospitals.
The Opposition member is urging Premier Danielle Smith and the UCP government to respond to what he calls a troubling trend and to take steps to improve vaccination coverage and protect public health.
