FORT McMURRAY — WinterPLAY is just around the corner, bringing families and friends together in Fort McMurray for several days of winter activities, outdoor fun and community celebration.
Event organizers say the annual festival is designed to create shared memories and encourage residents to embrace winter through recreation, culture and family friendly programming. The event grounds will open Friday at 2 p.m., later than originally planned, following extreme cold earlier in the week that delayed preparation work.
After Friday, WinterPLAY will run daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., with security monitoring the site during and after operating hours. Visitors are asked to respect event hours to help maintain safety.
Daily attractions include horse and wagon rides, ice sculptures and slides, and leisure skating at Borealis Park. A series of activities throughout the weekend will feature community pancake breakfasts, ice sculpture demonstrations and fireside gatherings.
Indigenous cultural programming is also scheduled across multiple days, including storytelling and bannock with Elder Lorraine Albert, Métis cultural experiences and crafting sessions hosted in partnership with local organizations.
The event also includes sports and entertainment highlights, including the Shootout on the Snye hockey tournament, theme skate nights and a fireworks display planned for Sunday evening.
Organizers say WinterPLAY continues to serve as a winter tradition aimed at bringing the community together and encouraging residents to enjoy the season through connection, culture and outdoor activity.
