EDMONTON — Alberta’s government is investing $28 million in new energy technologies aimed at boosting production while reducing environmental impacts.
The funding, delivered through the industry-funded Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction program, will support six projects under Emissions Reduction Alberta’s Industrial Transformation Challenge.
Provincial officials say the projects are designed to help companies lower emissions, improve efficiency and remain competitive as Alberta works toward a goal of doubling energy production by 2035.
The initiatives span the energy and agri-food sectors. In southern Alberta, a project in Coaldale will convert cattle farm waste into renewable natural gas. In Suffield, new technology will be tested to enhance the safety of carbon capture pipelines.
Other projects include efforts in Calgary to increase output from existing wells, methane reduction work in Yellowhead County, site remediation technology in Leduc to restore former oil and gas lands, and research in Edmonton to reduce methane emissions from cattle.
The province estimates the projects will reduce about 260,000 tonnes of emissions by 2030, create roughly 1,000 jobs and contribute nearly $167 million to Alberta’s economy by 2027.
Individual investments range from $625,000 to $12 million per project
