EDMONTON — More than 800 workers at OEM Remanufacturing have voted to leave the Christian Labour Association of Canada and join the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 955 in what the union calls the largest migration away from CLAC ever recorded in Canada.
IUOE 955 says 815 employees cast ballots during a Nov. 27 and 28 vote at the Edmonton worksite after a year of discussions about wages, benefits and workplace representation. The organizing drive began when OEM workers first approached the local roughly 12 months ago.
Business manager Chris Flett said the result answers workers’ demands for a stronger voice and more effective representation. Assistant business manager Anthony Noseworthy said the shift reflects months of conversations at the union hall, outside the OEM facility and through digital outreach. He called the vote a testament to workers’ resolve and to the union’s commitment to fair treatment.
IUOE 955 describes the outcome as one of its most significant organizing wins and says it looks forward to negotiating on behalf of the new members. The local represents about 12,000 workers across construction, mining, pipelines, remanufacturing, crane operation, renewables, health care, education and municipal sectors.
