FORT MCMURRAY–With hunting season now underway across Alberta, Wood Buffalo RCMP are reminding hunters to keep safety and security top of mind. Officers say following proper safety measures not only protects hunters, but also helps ensure the safety of other outdoor enthusiasts who share Alberta’s natural spaces.
RCMP have released a list of safety tips aimed at making the season safe, responsible, and enjoyable. Hunters are urged to secure firearms at all times, whether in transit or in the field, and to inspect all equipment before heading out.
Firearms should be stored in locked cases or secured with trigger locks when not in use, and must always be unloaded during transportation.
Police also stress the importance of never leaving firearms unattended in vehicles or public places, even briefly, to prevent theft or misuse. Hunters are encouraged to avoid high-traffic areas and marked trails, wear high-visibility clothing—preferably orange—and ensure they have all required licenses, tags, and permits.
Respecting designated zones and protected wildlife areas, as well as adhering to official hunting season dates, are also key to a safe experience. RCMP recommend carrying a first aid kit, a fully charged phone or communication device, and informing someone of your hunting location in case of emergencies.
“Over the past several weeks, Wood Buffalo RCMP have received an increase in complaints of theft from vehicles. Of the items reported stolen, this has included several firearms,” said Chief Superintendent Mark Hancock, Officer in Charge of the Wood Buffalo RCMP. “We want to remind all citizens on the importance of ensuring all valuables are removed from vehicles or out of sight, especially firearms. Leaving unattended firearms is a safety risk to the community and the police.”
