Danielle Smith License Plate News Conference,
EDMONTON— Alberta drivers will soon help decide the look of the province’s first new licence plate in more than four decades.
From Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, Albertans can vote online in a tournament-style contest to choose a new plate design that reflects the province’s “Strong and Free” identity. The final design will be unveiled during the fall session of the legislature, with the new plates expected to be available in late 2026.
Premier Danielle Smith said the redesign is a chance for Albertans to express their pride. “From our wide-open landscapes to our entrepreneurial spirit, Alberta has so much to be proud of, and our new licence plate will reflect that pride,” she said. “For the first time in four decades, Albertans will choose how we tell that story.”
The eight proposed designs feature Alberta landmarks such as the Three Sisters Mountains, along with imagery tied to key industries like agriculture and energy. After an initial round of voting, four designs will advance, followed by two, before a final vote selects the winner.
Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally said the new plate will highlight the province’s strength and independence. “Alberta is strong and free, and Albertans will have the opportunity to choose a new licence plate that captures that spirit,” he said.
Albertans who want to switch to the new plate once released can pay a $28 fee or wait until their registration renewal, when the change will be free. Drivers may also keep their current plate if it remains in good condition.
Alberta’s current licence plate was introduced in 1984. Reflective versions of the same design were added in 2021 to improve visibility and readability for law enforcement and automated systems. The new plates will continue using reflective technology and meet international standards for visibility, legibility and counterfeit resistance.
