Harvard Media News reached out to each candidate running for office to ask a set of questions on the office for which they are running. The following is our Q&A with Fort McMurray Public School Trustee Candidate, Pam Bowie. All responses are from the candidate or their agent and are unedited by Harvard Media News.
Harvard: What do you see as the key issues facing students and teachers today?
The key issues facing students and teachers today is not enough support in the classroom. I have spoken to parents with children with special needs and they are not getting the support they need right now.
Harvard: How familiar are you with the Alberta Education Act and the limitations placed on trustees?
I am familiar with the Alberta Education Act, and the limitations on trustees. The board is responsible for the financial stewardship with the school board. They work closely with the Superintendent who will implement the board decisions. There are opportunities for the board to advocate to the government for the needs of the district.
Harvard: What support will you offer the Superintendent in implementing the board’s strategic direction?
The board is the voice of the community, and hence needs to ensure the strategic direction needs to be one that the parents can support. The board needs to listen to the parents’ concerns and make the right decisions moving forward for the district.
Harvard: Do you have children in the system, and how have their experiences influenced your perspective?
Both of my children went through the system. I sat on the Parent Council in their elementary and secondary schools. During my children’s time at the district I felt parents’ needs were not always heard at the district level. I want to advocate for those parents and students who need to be heard.
