That mean mug is looking much better in the latest trailer for Predator: Badlands. Created using a blend of practical animatronics and CGI, the face of our alien protagonist was giving some uncanny valley vibes when first revealed. The polish is apparent in this new look at the warriors, synths, and creatures tangling on a harsh scary planet where everything you see wants to kill you.
Though the Alien vs Predator movies are not considered canon, fans generally place the two franchises right beside each other. This movie looks to be connecting the two franchises in one of the most detailed ways we’ve seen on screen – again, aside from those two tentpole crossover movies. There have been some stinkers in the past for the Predator franchise in particular. Predator 2 was a left turn from the first one which alienated some fans (but made all new ones). Predators was an off-world set piece that wasn’t terrible, but wasn’t particularly memorable. The Predator in 2018 was a real stinker that frustrates me just thinking about it. But then Dan Trachtenberg showed up with Prey (shot in Alberta!) and changed the whole game. There’s no way that movie should have been released to streaming without a wide theatrical release because it is AWESOME. It was also successful enough to open more doors for Dan who is also directing Predator: Badlands, and helped to bring us the anthology animation Predator: Killer of Killers earlier this year. Now Trachtenberg is promising that come release day we’ll see something we’ve never seen before. Will you be there?
