FORT McMURRAY, AB. — The wildfire danger in Fort McMurray is rated extreme as hot, dry weather lingers into late September, just as big game hunting season gets underway and more people head into the backcountry.
Alberta Wildfire says the rest of the Fort McMurray Forest Area is listed as very high, with no significant rain in the forecast. Officials warn wildfires can ignite easily and spread quickly and are asking residents and hunters to avoid activities that could spark a blaze.
Two wildfires are currently burning in the area. Both are classified as under control and are not a threat to communities. Since Jan. 1 there have been 61 wildfires in the forest area, burning about 79,404 hectares.
A fire restriction is in effect. Outdoor wood fires on public lands, fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited. Safe wood campfires are allowed in backyard firepits, on private land and in designated rings at provincial campgrounds. Propane fire pits, natural gas barbecues and charcoal briquettes on private land and in provincial campgrounds are also permitted.
Hunters are reminded that under a fire restriction campfires are not allowed in random backcountry camping areas. If you are in a permitted area, build fires in cleared spots, keep them small, never leave them unattended and extinguish them fully by soaking, stirring and soaking again until the ashes are cold.
Off-highway vehicle users are urged to clean debris from hot spots before and after rides, carry basic firefighting tools, check mufflers and spark arrestors and stop frequently to knock debris clear. If debris is smouldering, soak it, stir it and soak it again.
