We had to wait nearly two decades for the follow up to 28 Days and 28 Weeks Later, but there’s only a gap of about 6 months between the latest chapter and its upcoming spin-off story – 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. That title makes it sound like a movie about a middle-aged Van Wilder-type going back to visit his dorm room decades later. The actual movie couldn’t be further from it, however. This time Danny Boyle is only serving as producer while Alex Garland returns as scriptwriter and Nia DaCosta directs. (her big superhero set-piece The Marvels may have had a lukewarm reception and a forgettable villain, but I really enjoyed her sequel/reboot of Candyman a few years ago.)
It’s sure to be both gruesome and heartfelt, disturbing and beautiful – just as the franchise has consistently been so far. It’s also sure to answer a few questions, particularly some Jimmy-and-his-tracksuit-kung-fu-fighting-team questions that viewers undoubtedly had after watching the new entry earlier this year. What the hell was that? Besides awesome.
