EDMONTON — Alberta is launching a public consultation on whether nuclear power should be part of the province’s energy future.
The government has established a six-member expert panel and launched an online survey to gather input from Albertans, Indigenous communities, and industry on how nuclear energy could be integrated into the province’s electricity system.
Premier Danielle Smith said the process comes as Alberta faces rapid growth and rising power demand. “Nuclear power has the potential to expand our grid, support new industries and keep pace with rising demand,” she said. “This engagement gives Albertans a real voice in shaping our future, while positioning our province to lead the way in innovative, responsible energy development.”
Utilities Minister Nathan Neudorf said any nuclear option must balance costs with reliability. “Exploring nuclear energy is about ensuring Albertans have access to dependable, emissions-free power that can support families, businesses and communities for generations,” he said.
The panel will deliver recommendations on how Alberta could enable a nuclear industry, while feedback from the survey will help form a roadmap. Chair Chantelle de Jonge said she is proud to lead a process that allows people to “have their say and shape the future of energy in our province.”
