Fort McMurray – The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) has been awarded a $200,000 grant through Intact Financial Corporation’s national climate resiliency initiative. The funding will enhance a rebate program that helps homeowners make wildfire-resistant upgrades to their properties—reducing the risk from airborne embers during wildfires.
The initiative builds on the success of a previous $100,000 grant that launched the rebate program in 2022. Since then, more than 900 FireSmart™ Home Assessments have been completed across the region. The new funding will extend the program beyond 2026 and includes personalized wildfire mitigation advice and education for residents.
“FireSmart is part of how we live in our community, and we’re always committed to doing what we can to best protect the people that live here” said Mayor Sandy Bowman. “We all collectively benefit when we work together to increase resiliency and reduce the impact of wildfires, and the great thing about this program is that it enables and supports residents and homeowners themselves,”
Wood Buffalo is one of 19 communities selected from over 170 applicants nationwide.
Intact’s Municipal Climate Resiliency Grant program supports local efforts to adapt to climate change, recognizing municipalities as key players on the front lines of environmental challenges.
