Wildfire danger rising across northeast Alberta heading into the weekend
FORT McMURRAY, AB. — Alberta Wildfire is warning residents in the northeast to be cautious outdoors this weekend as hot, dry conditions push wildfire danger levels higher.
The danger is currently very high in Fort Chipewyan and Fort Smith, high in the southern portion of the Fort McMurray Forest Area, and extreme in the Lac La Biche Forest Area. Officials say wildfires in these conditions can ignite easily, spread quickly and be difficult to control.
Alberta Wildfire is urging residents to take every precaution to prevent new starts.
Seven wildfires are currently burning in the Fort McMurray Forest Area. All are classified as under control and are being monitored for smoke and hot spots as part of suppression efforts. Alberta Wildfire says there is no threat to communities.
Since Jan. 1, 54 wildfires have burned roughly 79,228 hectares in the Fort McMurray Forest Area.
Smoke from wildfires burning across Canada is also creating hazy conditions in the region. Alberta Health advises residents to limit outdoor activity when smoke is present and to call Health Link at 811 if they experience respiratory problems.
Up-to-date information on wildfire locations is available through Alberta Wildfire’s online status dashboard and mobile app.
