Alberta MLAs head to Boston to promote energy and agriculture exports
EDMONTON — Alberta MLAs are heading to Boston this week to push for a barrier‑free trade relationship with the United States. The delegation will attend the National Conference of State Legislators from Aug. 2 to 7, promoting Alberta as a key partner in energy, agriculture and cross‑border trade.
MLAs Angela Pitt, Glenn Van Dijken and Chelsae Petrovic will meet lawmakers and decision makers from across the U.S. The goal is to strengthen Alberta’s economic ties, advocate for cross‑border pipelines and highlight the province as a secure and reliable supplier of food and energy.
Pitt said the meetings will focus on enhancing two‑way trade that supports prosperity on both sides of the border. Van Dijken will sit on the conference’s agriculture task force, emphasizing Alberta’s role in North American food security, while Petrovic said ensuring Alberta’s voice is heard by influential American legislators is a top priority.
The United States is Alberta’s largest trading partner, with exports worth $162.1 billion in 2024. Energy made up $133.4 billion of that total, while agriculture exports reached $9.2 billion, up four per cent from the previous year. The province is Canada’s second‑largest exporter to the U.S., behind Ontario.
The National Conference of State Legislators brings together lawmakers from all 50 states and U.S. territories to encourage co‑operation and information exchange. Alberta became an affiliate member last year and now participates on the organization’s International Advisory Council.
