Hot, dry weather fuels flare-ups as crews brace for more fire activity
Alberta Wildfire crews are battling 34 active fires across the province, as hot, dry weather fuels new starts in several regions. Eighteen fires are currently classified as out of control, with the Slave Lake Forest Area seeing a spike in activity over the past few days.
In contrast, the Fort McMurray Forest Area has remained relatively quiet, though four new fires were reported in the last 24 hours. Three of those are burning out of control, while one is being held. Despite the recent uptick, Fort McMurray has seen just 15 fires so far this year, with fewer than three hectares burned — a sharp drop from the same period in 2023.
Crews across Alberta are facing challenging conditions as temperatures climb and precipitation remains scarce. The Slave Lake region has been particularly hard hit, with nearly a dozen fires recently classified as out of control.
Officials continue to monitor fire activity closely as crews work to contain the spread. Residents are being urged to follow local fire bans and use extreme caution when outdoors.
Fire danger ratings remain high in many parts of the province as Alberta Wildfire braces for continued volatility in the days ahead.
