Spring in Fort McMurray: Gearing Up for a Solid Summer
Spring’s finally here in Fort McMurray, and let me tell you—it feels good to be back outside. After a long winter, there’s nothing better than puttering around the yard or moving things around in the garage, even if I’m just shifting stuff from one side to the other. I don’t need a reason; it’s just part of the rhythm of spring. Something about the fresh air and the sun staying out longer makes you want to do something—even if that something is just finding a new home for an old toolbox.
The yard’s getting some love too. I just finished seeding it, so now I’m on full lawn patrol. If I could put up a sign, it’d say: “Neighborhood kids—please stay off the grass! It’s trying its best!” Seriously though, watching the yard come back to life is one of those quiet little joys, even if it means acting like the grumpy lawn guy for a few weeks.
What really makes it all worthwhile is hanging out with my old lady and the kids. Our oldest is seven and always up for an adventure (or to “help” in the yard), and our youngest is just about 10 months and already itching to crawl into summer. I can’t wait to take them out to Gregoire Lake—there’s nothing quite like that first beach day of the year. Sand in everything, snacks half-eaten, and big smiles all around.
On top of that, one of my old fire department buddies just moved his young family to Fort Mac too. We used to volunteer together back in the day, and now our kids will grow up hanging out in the same neighborhoods. Pretty stoked about that.
And with the Hello Summer Music Festival just around the corner and the Fort McMurray Giants baseball season kicking off soon, it’s shaping up to be a busy, fun summer. Can’t wait to hit a few games, hear some live music, and just soak it all in.
Here’s to a great season—full of lake days, garage hangs, neighborhood memories, and maybe (just maybe) a lush lawn… if those kids keep off it.
Cheers to Spring,
Jordan
