Drop off pet waste for free at convenient locations this April
Fort McMurray, AB – Spring has arrived, and with it comes the need to clean up pet waste that accumulated over the winter. To help residents dispose of it responsibly, the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo is providing free pet waste drop-off at two locations this April.
Pet owners can bring their double-bagged pet waste to Centrefire Place in Thickwood on April 19 and 27, or to J. Howard Pew Park in Waterways on April 20 and 26. Both sites will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on their designated days.
Accepted materials include fecal matter, kitty litter, training pads, and soiled wood chips or newspapers. All waste must be double-bagged for sanitation and to prevent the spread of bacteria.
The RMWB reminds residents that pet waste should never go in blue recycling bins, as it contaminates recyclables and creates health risks for workers at the recycling facility. Large amounts should also not be placed in public bins at parks, trails, or transit stops.
For those who can’t use the drop-off service, other disposal options include using a Green Cone composter for organic waste, taking bagged waste to the municipal landfill, or placing double-bagged waste in your regular black garbage bin.
