Calgary Man Charged After Fatal Collision at Downtown Fort McMurray Restaurant
FORT MCMURRAY, Alberta— A tragic accident at a downtown Boston Pizza restaurant has left a young woman dead and a Calgary man facing serious charges. Wood Buffalo RCMP and Regional Emergency Services were called to the scene at 11:36 a.m. on Saturday after a white Ford F350 crashed into the side of the restaurant on Richard Street, causing significant structural damage and critically injuring a 24-year-old employee inside the building.
According to witnesses, first responders performed CPR on the victim, who was working in the lounge area at the time of the collision. She was quickly transported to hospital, but despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly afterward.
The driver, identified as 28-year-old Roger Sierra from Calgary, was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He has since been charged with one count of Criminal Negligence Causing Death. Due to a publication ban, RCMP have refrained from releasing additional details regarding the nature of the charge or evidence.
Cpl. Troy Savinkoff, Public Information Officer with the Alberta RCMP, explained that there are two elements to the charge of Criminal Negligence Causing Death. “RCMP first have probable cause to believe there was negligence outside of how a reasonable person would act under the circumstances,” said Savinkoff. “Second, the actions resulted in a person’s death.”
The RCMP continue to investigate with assistance from Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.
In a public statement, Alberta RCMP expressed condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy. “This tragic loss of life is deeply felt by the family, friends, and the entire community.”
The restaurant remains closed as investigators and repair crews assess the damage, and officials urge the public to avoid the area.
