Alberta Seeks More Federal Support for Jasper Recovery After Wildfire Devastation

Alberta Urges Federal Government to Waive Cost-Share Formula for Jasper Recovery

Alberta is calling on the federal government to waive the cost-sharing formula in the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements (DFAA) for Jasper’s recovery efforts. This request follows criticism of the federal response to a recent wildfire that destroyed nearly 30 per cent of the town.

The province is seeking additional funding beyond what is outlined in the existing accord. Alberta has already allocated $7.5 million in emergency evacuation payments and set aside $149 million for recovery. However, only a small portion of these funds are eligible for reimbursement under the DFAA.

The province is quick to point out that the wildfire originated in a national park, which falls under federal jurisdiction. Earlier this week, Deputy Premier Mike Ellis leveled criticism at Parks Canada’s response to the Jasper Wildfire, noting that Alberta was hamstrung by jurisdictional issues when offering help with firefighting efforts when the blaze broke out.
