Load restrictions coming to gravel roads

Weight restrictions are coming into effect on gravel roads within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB).

Beginning Monday, May 25, 2024, the maximum load limit permitted on gravel roads will be reduced to 75 per cent of the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) and includes the weight of any trailers or cargo.

The Municipality says the seasonal adjustments are intended to help preserve the integrity of the road and ensure public safety.  The RMWB says the restrictions are being applied to the following routes:

  • West Road, Conklin
  • Stoney Mountain Crossover, Cheecham Hills
  • Tower Road, Fort McMurray
  • Aostra Road, West of Suncor off Hwy 63
  • Fort Fitzgerald, Hwy 48
  • Hwy 49 to Salt River
  • True North Road

In addition to load limits, the RMWB says there may be other safety measures in place on gravel roads, such as reduced axel weights, due to seasonal conditions.
