Warmer weather weakens winter roads

Motorists planning on traveling the Fort Chipewyan Winter Road are advised to use extra caution.

The Regional Municipality says warm weather has made the route unsuitable for light vehicles without high ground clearance.

Large water-filled potholes currently dot the road, making driving difficult. The RM says only high-clearance vehicles should attempt to travel on the road.

Weight restrictions remain in place and vehicles over 5,000 kg are only permitted on the road at night between 10 p.m. and 10 a.m.

The RMWB says drivers should expect rough, spring-like conditions and watch for icy sections of the road. Snow chains are advised for hilly sections but must be removed afterward to avoid damaging the road. All road users are asked to drive slowly to match conditions.
