Legal experts call on Premier to rethink Transgender policies

Opposition to Alberta’s proposed Transgender, parental rights, and gender education policies continues.

A coalition of 36 academics, including law professors, legal researchers, and staff from Alberta’s top universities, are calling upon the province to reassess recent policies concerning transgender youth.

In an open letter sent to the Premier, the group says they believe the proposed laws violate Canada’s Charter of Rights while undermining the education of trans youth.

“We have come together to express our deep concerns with the government’s announcement of restrictions targeting transgender youth,” reads the letter.

“We believe these restrictions violate their rights, as enshrined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.”

While drafts of Alberta’s new laws have not yet been released, Saskatchewan used the constitution’s notwithstanding clause to shield similar laws in their province from any potential Charter challenges.
