RMWB increases Fort Chipewyan winter road load limit to 15,000kg, some permits required

Winter Road – RMWB Website

The RMWB has increased the load limit on the winter road between Fort Chipewyan and Fort McMurray.

Vehicles up to 15,000 kilograms can begin travelling on the road at noon on Jan. 5, 2024.

The road opened to vehicles under 5,000kg on Dec. 20, 2023.

Vehicles over the limit must stay off until limits are increased due to concerns about damage to the road or serious safety hazards.

Heavy vehicles, such as fuel trucks, are also required to have permits to use the winter road.

The request must be submitted to the RMWB two weeks before the beginning of the trip.

Applications require a map of the route the driver is taking, a road maintenance plan, and a description of the vehicle and what materials are being hauled.

The RMWB says limits are expected to increase as the ice thickens.

They say factors such as water levels, weather conditions, and human use can impact the limit increase.

Drivers are reminded to drive on the right side of the road, appropriate to the conditions, and to be aware of steep hills.
