Man arrested in Fort McMurray in connection to 2022 Edmonton shooting, also facing drug charges

A man was arrested in Fort McMurray on Nov. 28, 2023, by the Edmonton Police Service (EPS), who believe he took part in a shooting in May 2022 in southwest Edmonton.

Officers responded to a report of multiple shooters on May 15, 2022, between the neighbourhoods of Allard and Cavanagh in Edmonton.

Residents reported hearing gunfire around 4:35 a.m. with the suspects shooting across the street.

Two homes were struck by bullets with a bullet being recovered in an occupied bedroom on Checknita Way and a bullet hole found in the laundry room of a home on Checknita Common.

No injuries were reported and security footage showed multiple vehicles and people leaving the scene.

A handgun was seized in Fort McMurray by Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) officers in June 2022.

EPS investigators were able to perform a ballistic analysis on the gun and connect it to the May 2022 shooting.

Nagib Abdirahman was arrested by ALERT Fort McMurray and the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit on Nov. 28, 2023.

A search warrant was performed on his home where officers found around 500 grams of cocaine, around 9 grams of fentanyl, more than $19,000 in Canadian currency, and other drug trafficking items in his basement.

Abdirahman is facing two counts of possession of a controlled substance for trafficking, discharging a firearm with intent, and possession of a prohibited/restricted firearm with ammunition.
