New coins to bear King Charles III likeness

New coin design with King Charles III, Royal Canadian Mint unveiling ceremony

Change is in the air at the Royal Canadian Mint.

The maker of our Canadian currency is replacing the image of the Queen on our coins with the effigy of King Charles III. The image of the King was designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati and received approval from Buckingham Palace.

“I am honoured and humbled to have had my design of His Majesty King Charles III’s effigy chosen for such a prestigious moment in the history of Canadian coins and very excited and proud to eventually see it in production,” said Rosati.

“I am also very grateful to be among the many talented artists who have done designs for the Royal Canadian Mint.”

The first issue of the new loonies rolled off the mint in Winnipeg to mark King Charles’ 75th birthday.

The Mint plans to begin circulating a small volume of other denominations by this December through public coin exchanges and by meeting new market demand through the national coin management system.

It will be a while before you see the Kings face in our twenties though. The mint says they’re still in the design phase of the eventual issue.
