Crews with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) are busy working on the winter road to Fort Chipewyan.

The RMWB expects to open the road before December 25th, but they are reminding residents the construction is weather-dependent.

Road users will need to use the temporary bypass at the Embarass River Crossing again this year. Over the summer, high water damaged the permanent ramp the RMWB built last winter. Engineering teams will reassess the ramp and conduct repairs in the coming months.

The Municipality is reminding those planning on using the winter road to Fort Chipewyan that:

  • All heavy vehicles, such as fuel trucks and semi-trailers, require a permit to use the winter road. Please submit the permit application as soon as possible to prevent any delays. Find more information on permits and other important details in the Heavy Vehicle Information Package.
  • Do not travel on the winter road when it’s closed. This creates a very serious safety risk and could cause damage, delaying the opening of the winter road.
  • Review the Winter Road Safety Tips before traveling.
