The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation (ACFN) is announcing the election results for their Chief and Council.

With the votes now tallied, Allan Adam was re-elected as Chief of the First Nation. Chief Adam received just shy of 359 votes in total. He was challenged by Raymond Cardinal who won 218 votes.

Adam has served as Chief of ACFN for 16 years, steering the First Nation through the challenges of oil sands growth, environmental issues, a pandemic, and the recent fire that caused the evacuation of the entire community.

In early September, Chief Adam, along with four other First Nations, declared a state of emergency due to ongoing issues surrounding addictions and mental health.

Chief Adam’s term will continue until 2027.
