The Otipemisiwak Métis Government (OMG) of the Métis Nation within Alberta and the Edmonton Oilers Hockey Group are in discussions about hosting an Oilers Alumni Heritage Game. 

The dialogue comes from a new partnership forged between the two organizations aimed at fostering Indigenous Youth participation in Hockey.

The Métis are also releasing a video showcasing a recent Edmonton Oilers U9 girls hockey camp, which included five Métis girls.

The Otipemisiwak notes that several of the recommendations from the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission call for actions related to Indigenous inclusion in athletics.

“The Otipemisiwak Métis Government recognizes that youth sports can help improve the health and well-being of Métis youth who in turn contribute to healthier communities,” said Lorna Dancey, Truth and Reconciliation Director, Otipemisiwak Métis Government.

“We’re thrilled to partner with the Oilers Hockey Group and offer athletic programming that instills self-esteem and leadership skills in our youth.”

Mandy Kaiser, a Métis Citizen, says her daughter was among the group of Métis girls who got to participate in Oilers Hockey School this summer. She believes these partnerships make hockey more accessible and welcoming to Indigenous youth.

“Sport can be a powerful vehicle for healing and strengthening relationships with Indigenous communities as we work together to advance Reconciliation,” said Tim Shipton, Executive Vice President, OEG Sports & Entertainment.

“We’re proud to partner with the Otipemisiwak Métis Government to help make hockey more inclusive of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta.”

The Métis say their partnership with the Oilers will reduce barriers to participation in community sports programs and nurture the development of young Indigenous athletes.
