Wood Buffalo RCMP along with the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit are investigating the suspicious death of a man in Fort McMurray.

In the early hours of Sunday, September 24th, Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to a report of gunshots in a Thickwood neighbourhood. Moments later police received another 911 call from someone reporting a man laying unresponsive on Tundra Drive.

Regional Emergency Services attended the call and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

Police are treating the death as a homicide, and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit have now taken charge of the investigation.

Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased, but they expect to have further information upon the completion of the autopsy, which is scheduled for Wednesday, September 27th in Edmonton.

Police are also continuing the investigation of a 17 year old man found deceased near Gregoire Lake last week.

Wood Buffalo RCMP acknowledge there have been three recent homicides in our region, but they do not believe the events are related to one another.

“Wood Buffalo RCMP are aware of the community concerns arising from three apparent homicides in recent days and are working to identify the individuals responsible,” writes Wood Buffalo RCMP.

“At this time, investigators believe that these are not random attacks against members of the public.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information about this or any other crimes, to please contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP at 780-788-4040.
