New Alberta road rule going into effect ahead of long weekend

New Road Rules – Government of Alberta

A new Alberta road rule is going into effect starting Friday, September 1, 2023.

Drivers must slow down to 60 km/h or the posted speed limit, whichever is lower, or move over if safe to do so when passing all roadside workers with their flashing or alternating lights on.

The new rule is similar to the prior rule for passing police, ambulances, fire trucks, and tow trucks.

The updated rule now includes roadside workers, snowplow operators, and highway maintenance workers.

Drivers who do not comply with the rule could receive a $243 ticket and three demerits to their license and if they do not slow down, they could also be subject to a speeding fine.

Drivers cannot pass a snowplow if the view along the side of the snowplow is blocked, if passing the snowplow would delay the operation of the snowplow, or if the passing cannot be done safely.

Those who do not comply with the snowplow rules could receive a $324 fine and 3 demerits on their license.
