Wood Buffalo RCMP investigating six separate vehicle arsons

Wood Buffalo RCMP is investigating six separate vehicle arsons that occurred in Janvier and Fort McMurray.

The incidents occurred over a three-hour span on the night of July 16, 2023, and into the early morning of July 17, 2023.

The timeline of events was provided as:

  • On July 16, at 11:30 pm, RCMP and Janvier Fire Department respond to a vehicle arson in front of a home in Janvier.
  • On July 17, at midnight, a burnt-out vehicle was located by the RCMP on the access road to Janvier.
  • On July 17, at 1:30 am, RCMP and the Janvier Fire Department respond to a forest fire. The RCMP says a third vehicle arson was discovered once on scene. They say the fire had spread to the surrounding forest, causing greater damage in the area.
  • On July 17, at 1:00 am, RCMP and Fort McMurray Fire Department responded to two vehicle arsons in Fort McMurray along Centennial Drive.
  • On July 17, at 1:50 am, RCMP and the Fort McMurray Fire Department responded to another vehicle fire near Cobblestone Bay.

No injuries were reported as a result of the fires.
