After 28 days, Alberta is ending the provincial state of emergency.
The province declared an emergency on May 6th after wildfires began raging across the province forcing the evacuation of communities as authorities scrambled to contain dozens of blazes.
Fort Chipewyan remains evacuated due to a fire burning less than ten kilometers from the hamlet. The out-of-control blaze has grown to over 21 thousand hectares in size, roughly half the size of St. John’s Newfoundland. Close to 1,000 residents have been evacuated from the community.
The province currently has 60 firefighters, multiple aircraft, and several pieces of heavy equipment battling the forest fire.
Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Mikisew Cree First Nation, Fort Chipewyan Métis Nation, the Municipality and Province with support from the military are working non-stop to protect the community. The troops from the military are staying at Archie Simpson Arena
The provincial Fire-weather forecast is showing some good news. According to Alberta Wildfire the hazard is trending downward in the region. They are predicting a 60 percent chance of light to moderate precipitation in Fort Chip. Here in Fort McMurray, there is a 100 percent chance of light to moderate precipitation.
Although the rain may bring some relief, a fire ban and OHV restriction remains in place over the Fort McMurray Forest Area. All outdoor fires, back yard firepits, Charcoal barbequing, fireworks, and off highway vehicles are prohibited.
