Community to celebrate Filipino Heritage Month

The Filipino-Canadian Association of Fort McMurray is celebrating the 125th anniversary of Philippine Independence this weekend.

The month of June commemorates National Filipino Heritage Month throughout Canada. According to census data, over five thousand residents of Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo speak Tagalog, the language of the Philippines, at home.

MLA Tany Yao, who himself has Filipino heritage, extends his gratitude to all Filipinos who have chosen to make Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo their home.

“I would like to wish all Filipinos near and afar a Happy Philippines Independence Day,” says Yao.

“I am grateful for the contributions each and every one of you make to our wonderful community.”

The Independence Day celebration will be held at the Fort McMurray Shipyard, starting at 10 a.m. on June 10th and 11th.
