UPDATE: Two new wildfires start up south of Fort McMurray

Update, May 16, 6:26 p.m.

Alberta Wildfire says MWF016 near Highway 63 is roughly 20 km south of Fort McMurray. Eight wildland firefighters and two helicopters responded and held it quickly.

They say LWF120, south of Anzac, currently has 12 wildland firefighters, four helicopters, an air tanker, and heavy equipment attending the scene.

Alberta Wildfire is reporting two new wildfires that were discovered today (May 16) south of Fort McMurray.

The first fire (LWF120), near Engstrom Lake, south of Anzac, was discovered around 3:25 p.m. and is around one hectare. The fire is classified as ‘out of control’ and the cause is under investigation.

The second fire (MWF016), west of Gregoire Lake near Highway 63, was discovered around 3:40 p.m. and is around one hectare. The fire is classified as ‘being held’ and the cause is human.
