May 9 update: Wildfire hazard remains extreme

The local wildfire situation remains unchanged since yesterday.

There are currently two fires in the Fort McMurray area. Both fires are listed as under control and do not pose a threat to surrounding communities.

Alberta Wildfire says they are receiving a large volume of calls about smoke, which are diverting resources away from other essential tasks. They are asking residents to visit FireSmoke.ca to see where smoke is coming from.

There is currently a fire ban and OHV restriction in effect across Alberta. The RMWB has also enacted a fire ban. The RMWB ban prohibits:

  • Outside fires of any type, including:
  • Open-air fires
  • Recreational fires contained within a portable or fixed fire pit (including backyard fire pits)
  • Charcoal barbeques
  • Fireworks

The current wildfire hazard is listed as Extreme. Alberta Wildfire says Dry grass can catch easily and burn quickly. Any spark, hot exhaust or friction can cause a wildfire.

To report a wildfire, phone 310-FIRE toll-free from anywhere in Alberta.
