Three people facing drugs and weapons charges

Three people are facing charges after the RCMP executed a search warrant in the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation (CPFN).

On Friday, Wood Buffalo RCMP General Duty officers in conjunction with the Wood Buffalo Drug Investigation Section conducted a search of a property located within the First Nation.

As a result of the search, RCMP seized:

  • 170 grams of suspected crystal methamphetamine
  • 20 grams of suspected cocaine
  • Illegally obtained prescription medications
  • Two firearms
  • Ammunition
  • Canadian currency

40-year-old Diane Cardinal, a resident of Conklin, is charged with:

  • Drug Possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm

43-year-old Quentin Janvier, a resident of Chipewyan Prairie First Nation, is charged with:

  • Drug possession for the purpose of trafficking
  • Possession of weapons contrary to an order
  • Failure to comply with a release order
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm

Police also arrested 46-year-old Ephrem Guetre, a resident of La Loche, SK on an outstanding warrant. Guetre is now facing an additional charge of possession of property obtained by crime.

Earlier this year, the Chief of the Chipewyan Prairie First Nation issued a plea for federal support to help the First Nation deal with a deluge of drug and social issues. In calling for federal support, Chief Vern Janvier noted that 10 per cent of the population of CPFN have succumbed to premature death in the past five years

The Chipewyan Prairie First Nation is located outside the hamlet of Janvier, approximately 110 kilometers south of Fort McMurray.
