Fort McMurray Standing In Solidarity With Ukraine With Vigil

Fort McMurray is standing in solidarity with Ukraine by holding a candlelight vigil Friday night.

The Fort McMurray Ukrainian Cultural Society, the Rotary Club Oilsands, and the YMM Stands with Ukraine Committee have joined together to recognize the 365 days of resistance since Russia invaded Ukraine.

The vigil is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Meadowcreek Village Clubhouse, to support those who have arrived in Fort McMurray, and to show solidarity with Ukraine.

According to the Fort McMurray Ukrainian Cultural Society, at least 130 newcomers have settled in Fort McMurray, with more arriving weekly.

“Locally, efforts have been made by sharing Ukrainian culture and assisting those who arrive in Fort McMurray,” the society says in a press release.

You can make a donation to the Ukrainians Wood Buffalo Community Foundation Ukrainian Fund here, where they have raised $37,605 of their $100,000 goal (as of February 24).

“All funds raised directly support Ukrainian evacuees who are making their new home here in Fort McMurray Wood Buffalo,” says Wood Buffalo Community Foundation.

“Each of their needs are unique but most will need assistance with hotels and housing; childcare; jobs and career placements; education and training; English lessons; clothing and food needs; etc.”
