Pandemic Takes Toll on Youth Mental Health, Study Shows

We are getting a glimpse into the toll the pandemic took on youth mental health in Canada.

In a media release, Sun Life Canada says mental health drug claims skyrocketed among Canadian youth. Data from the pandemic shows a nearly 25 per cent increase in claims for those under 30 years old.

The increase wasn’t just for prescription drugs. There was an increase of over 50 per cent for paramedical claims related to mental disorders in people under the age of 35.

Sun Life says that while these statistics may seem alarming, they could signal an increase in awareness and discussion around mental health issues and seeking support. This may be helping to break the stigma and encourage people to seek treatment for their mental health.

“The need for mental health support is huge and continues to grow,” says Marie-Chantal Côté, Senior Vice-President, Group Benefits, Sun Life

“We are committed to tackling the mental health crisis head-on.”

In January, Sun Life pledged nearly $4 million for youth mental health across Canada.
