Fort McMurray schools open for provincial day of mourning

In recognition of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the Alberta government has declared Monday, September 19 a day of mourning instead of a statutory holiday.

An outdoor ceremony in honour of the Queen will be held at the Alberta legislature at 10 a.m. on the day of her funeral in London.

“I sincerely hope that Albertans find some time on this day to honour the remarkable life of Queen Elizabeth II and I strongly encourage employers and schools to appropriately mark this sombre and historic occasion,” said Premier Jason Kenney.

The Fort McMurray Public School Division (FMPSD) and Fort McMurray Catholic School Division (FMCSD) have announced that all schools will remain open on Monday.

According to the school divisions, a moment of silence will be recognized and a livestream of the ceremony in Edmonton will be offered, however, it will be up to each school/classroom to decide if they will watch.
