Police make arrest after shelter in place issued in Abasand subdivision

Wood Buffalo RCMP responded to calls of a male with a firearm in the Abasand subdivision early Tuesday morning.

Officers arrived at the location at roughly 2:15 a.m. where the individual isolated himself in a nearby wooded area and eventually surrendered to police.

At 7:45 a.m., RCMP issued a shelter in place, requesting that residents in the Abasand area remain in their homes, and non-residents were asked not to enter.

The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo canceled its transit route 7 into Abasand during that time.

Cst. Karen Brookins, spokesperson for the Wood Buffalo RCMP commented that the area was contained by police and that the shelter in place was to allow officers to apprehend the individual safely.

Brookins stated that the RCMP did not believe the public was at any risk throughout the incident.

The issue to shelter in place was removed roughly two hours later.

The male remains in custody as the investigation is ongoing.
