Suncor has confirmed that earlier this morning a fatality occurred at the Suncor Base Plant located north of Fort McMurray.
A Suncor spokesperson released a statement to Mix News on Thursday regarding the incident.
“Early this morning, Suncor responded to an incident at our base plant mine located north of Fort McMurray and we are deeply saddened to confirm that the incident resulted in the fatality of a contractor worker. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this individual and as we continue our response, we are focused on the safety and well-being of our people and will provide more details as they become available. RCMP is on the scene, and we have notified the appropriate regulators and a full investigation will be conducted.”
The worker’s next of kin has since been notified.
Another incident took place at the base plant on Wednesday evening that caused a fire to break out.
The Suncor spokesperson commented that the two incidences were not related.
“Yesterday evening Suncor responded to a fire at our base plant operation. We immediately activated our emergency response procedures and evacuated the area. The fire has been extinguished and all personnel were safely evacuated and there were no injuries. The appropriate regulators and stakeholders have been notified and we have initiated a full investigation into that incident.”
