Final season for MacDonald Island Dance Academy

MacDonald Island Dance Academy (MIDA) will no longer be offering dance programming by the end of the 2021/22 dance season.

Following a sustainability review, the Regional Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo (RRC) found that private dance studios in the region would be better suited to offer the needed services.

MIDA was developed by MacDonald Island Park in 2012 to fill a needed gap in services that were missing in the region.

RRC began its review of MIDA before the COVID-19 pandemic in the fall of 2019 due to decreased registration.

RRC clarified that MIDA has not been the only sustainable review to take place at MacDonald Island, noting several others facing adjustments or reviews.

They claim that over the last five dance seasons, registration numbers had continuously tapered off while expenses rose.

RRC commented that quality recreational and competitive dance will remain at MacDonald Island now that a successful proposal has been accepted for the newly opened space by the YMM Dance Company.

“The RRC is confident that the private dance studios in the region have the capacity and programs necessary to meet the demand for service in the region based on feedback received from the studio operators,” RRC stated in a press release.
