Man wanted on several province-wide warrants since March has been arrested in Fort McMurray

A man wanted on several province-wide warrants was arrested on Tuesday by Wood Buffalo RCMP.

Idris Abdi, 34, was wanted by the Edmonton Police Service on numerous province-wide warrants in relation to a June 2021 shooting.

On June 5, 2021, Edmonton Police responded to reports of two men exchanging gunfire in an alley near 106 Avenue and 96 Street.

Police were informed that the two men fled before they arrived.

Two of the rounds struck bystanders, a male, and a female who had also been in the alley.

The 44-year-old male and 20-year-old female have since been discharged from the hospital.

Following an investigation, police identified one of the men to be Abdi, and a search warrant was executed on his vehicle and at his residence on July 6, 2021.

“Abdi was taken into custody at that time and a handgun, pepper spray, drugs and a variety of drug paraphernalia were located,” according to police reports. “In March 2022, after further forensic and ballistic investigations were completed, it was determined that the handgun located at Abdi’s residence was one of the weapons used during the June 2021 shooting.”

Edmonton Police had been unable to locate Abdi since that time and had been seeking tips from the public that would lead them to his whereabouts.

With the help of the public, Abdi was arrested in Fort McMurray by Wood Buffalo RCMP on April 5.
