Wildfire information access receives an upgrade

Two new web applications have been developed through the Government of Alberta to help residents access wildfire information.

A wildfire dashboard and fire permit portal have been added to the Alberta Wildfire app.

The wildfire dashboard is a new interactive tool that displays up-to-date information on the number of active wildfires, sizes, location, and suspected causes.

Albertans can now use the fire permit portal to request a free fire permit for use on their property or for recreational use.

Permits are required for burning purposes other than campfires during the wildfire season.

Fort McMurray Forest Area’s wildfire season began on March 1.

Fire permits can be canceled at any time due to a fire advisory, restriction or ban.

Last year saw roughly 76 per cent of land burned by wildfires in Alberta happen in the Wood Buffalo region.

There are three wildfires currently active in Alberta.
